Maintaining their policy to release footage within 30 days of a critical event, the Fairfax County Police Department held a press conference Monday detailing an officer-involved shooting from the previous month.

That bodycam video revealed how quickly 33-year-old Sydney Wilson, said to be a leasing operations manager according to her LinkedIn profile, went from ignoring Officer Peter Liu to charging him with a knife.

The video released of the Sept. 16 incident, and FCPD Chief of Police Kevin Davis’ subsequent press conference, detailed how 14-year veteran Liu had arrived at the Reston, Virginia apartment of Wilson to conduct a welfare check that was prompted by a concern from a mental health professional that “she was in an agitated state.”

After initially answering the door and closing it in Liu’s face, she could be heard playing music at the apartment entry for nearly three minutes as the officer continued to knock.

When she suddenly opened the door again, the suspect quickly lashed out with a knife, sending the officer retreating down the hallway, only to find himself backed into a dead-end as he drew his sidearm and instructed the woman to stop.

Reportedly 6’6″, according to the Daily Mail, Wilson ignored instructions and could be seen continuing her attack on Liu who received wounds to the forehead as he negotiated a way past her before striking her three times with gunshots.

“It could have been much, much, much worse; the slash — gash and slash wound he received was at the top of his forehead,” said Davis during the press conference as the video showed blood dripping from the wounds as Liu called in the shots fired and requested medical attention for the suspect and himself.

According to the FCPD, a mental health professional would normally have accompanied the crisis intervention-trained officer to the scene. However, a co-responder was unavailable at the time of the welfare check.

“Clinicians absolutely expose themselves to an element of danger any time they get out of a police car and go up to a door or a scene of a crash or an outdoor scenario with a police officer, and there’s an element of risk associated with it,” said Davis who noted that September’s officer-involved-shooting was the first for FCPD in nearly 500 days and that he couldn’t be certain a co-responder would have resulted in a different outcome.

Additional bodycam footage showed a plainclothes detective sergeant endeavoring to render life-saving aid to Wilson that included CPR and delivery of blood with the help of Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department. Despite their efforts, the suspect was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Liu was said to have been placed on restricted duty status pending the results of a “criminal and administrative investigation.”

Meanwhile, the Georgetown University Women’s Basketball team noted the loss of their former center in a post after her death that read, “Georgetown women’s basketball mourns the tragic loss of Sydney Wilson…Forever a Hoya.”
