The largest supplier of drinking water in the United States, American Water Works, said its computer systems had been hacked, according to reports.

The company provides drinking water to over 14 million people across 14 states.

The New Jersey-based company is also based in 18 US military installations.

“In an effort to protect our customers’ data and to prevent any further harm to our environment, we disconnected or deactivated certain systems. There will be no late charges for customers while these systems are unavailable,” an American Water spokesperson told CBS News.

They added that the company is “working around the clock to investigate the nature and scope of the incident.”

Hackers breached its computer networks and systems, prompting it to pause billing to customers.

The utility company became aware of the unauthorized activity on Thursday and was forced to shut down certain systems

The company says it doesn’t believe its facilities or operations were impacted by the cybersecurity incident.

They are now working with law enforcement to find out who is responsible.

American Water’s website states that it is the largest regulated water and wastewater utility company in the U.S., providing services to more than 14 million people in 14 states and 18 military installations.
