Hoo boy.

From NBC News:

Hurricane Milton is growing in strength in the Gulf of Mexico — forecast to soon become a Category 5 — and is making its way east towards Florida, potentially bringing devastating winds and dangerous storm surges.

A Category 5 hurricane has wind speeds of at least 157 mph.

The storm is expected to make landfall on Florida’s Gulf Coast on Wednesday, amid a number of evacuation warnings, as the state still recovers from Hurricane Helene.

There are 15 million people under flood watches in Florida, and 11 million are at risk for “tropical tornadoes,” which I just learned is a thing.

The silver lining? The storm looks like it will weaken a bit right before it hits the west coast of Florida; authorities say it will likely be a Category 3 as it reaches land.

Of course, with two days to go before it reaches land Wednesday evening, it’s anybody’s guess how that might change.
