Vice President Kamala Harris is adamant she will “never tell” people what kind of car to drive, pushing back against attacks by former President Trump.

“Let us be clear, contrary to what my opponent is suggesting, I will never tell you what kind of car you have to drive,” Harris said at a rally in Flint, Mich., on Friday. She may have been reacting to a Trump campaign ad running in Michigan claiming, “Kamala Harris wants to end all gas-powered cars.”

“Crazy but true,” the ad continues. “Harris’s push requiring electric-only is failing big and Michigan auto workers are paying the price.”

Many are seeing this as another about-face for the Democrat presidential nominee, being as she was a staunch proponent of electric vehicles before taking over the top of the party ticket when President Joe Biden ended his re-election bid.

“In her Senate days, Harris championed an electric-vehicle mandate – which her campaign now says she is opposed to,” the New York Post noted.

“As a California senator, the Democrat co-sponsored legislation in April 2019 that sought to ban the sale of gasoline-powered vehicles by 2040,” the outlet added. “The Harris-backed Zero-Emission Vehicles Act of 2019 – introduced by Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) and Rep. Mike Levin (D-Calif.) – was announced as a “bold plan for transitioning the United States to 100% zero-emission vehicles.”

A campaign spokesperson had said last month that Harris “does not support an electric vehicle mandate” even though she had done so previously.

“But here’s what I will do,” Harris told the Michigan crowd. “I will invest in communities like Flint. We will retool existing factories, hire locally and work with unions to create good paying jobs.”

“Under my plan, we will invest in the industries that built America, like steel, iron and the great American auto industry,” she said. “And we will ensure that the next generation of breakthroughs, from advanced batteries to electric vehicles, are not only invented but built right here in America, by American union workers.”

Harris insisted to CNN last week that her “values have not changed” but critics are calling her out.

American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers recently contended in ads that “there may be someone new in the driver’s seat, but the destination is the same: a ban on most new gas cars.”
