While all eyes have been on the southern U.S. border and the migrant crossing wrought by the Biden-Harris administration, border crossings at the north end of the country have been surging.
Border Patrol agents at the US-Canada border have noted 50 times as many apprehensions as in previous years, with more than 19,000 illegal migrants originating from 97 different countries just in fiscal year 2024 alone.

“That’s higher than the previous 17 fiscal years – combined,” Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin noted in a post on X.
Woah.
A single Border Patrol sector on the U.S. northern border that handles Vermont, NY, and NH, apprehended just over 19,000 illegal immigrants in fiscal year 2024.

The staggering figures were reported by agents from the Swanton sector which includes all of the state of Vermont as well as six upstate New York counties, and three counties in New Hampshire.
“US Border Patrol has taken significant action in response to increased encounters on the Northern border, beginning in spring. As a result of these expanded enforcement efforts, Swanton sector encounters fell by more than 50% from June to September and we continue to surge consequence delivery to address this challenge,” according to a CBP official.
The official noted that they “specifically amended the Safe Third Countries Agreement to apply to northern border encounters – a tool that they have on the northern border, but not the southern,” Melugin wrote in another post.

“The number of crossings from Canada is smaller compared to the southern border, where 54,000 illegal border crossings were recorded in September alone. However, they have been increasing at an incredible pace,” the New York Post noted. “In fiscal year 2021, just 365 illegal crossers were caught in the sector. The numbers climbed to more than 1,000 in 2022, and then nearly 7,000 last fiscal year.”
The shocking information caught the attention of social media users on X who had plenty of questions.
This is truly scary
Why don’t we know about this?
Thanks for bringing it to our attention— fixnow (@fixnow) October 2, 2024
What happens to them?
Which side of the border do they end up on?

Spike is incredible!

That’s just the number apprehended
Unless the USBP has some new tech that vastly increased the detection rate, the ratio of “got-aways to apprehensions” is presumably the same (or worse)
e.g. catch 1 out of 10, there are 173k that eluded capture in that sector alone

Our Northern border is huge. I wonder how many cross, where there’s no Border Patrol & no one even knows.

We need to institue a “stay in Canada” policy.
