Following Tuesday’s vice presidential debate in which Republican JD Vance walked up one side of Democrat Tim Walz and down the other, there was a fair amount of speculation as to whether Kamala Harris made a bad choice for her VP candidate. But the more we see of Kamala Harris on the campaign trail, the more she is forced to answer actual questions, and the more she is called to account for statements she has made in the past, the real question becomes this: Did Joe Biden make a catastrophically bad choice for his VP candidate?

The Democratic Party seems to be following a pattern in presidential politics; I’ve commented on it before. In 2008, Barack Obama apparently chose Joe Biden as his running mate because Biden was the only person in the Senate less capable than Barack Obama. When Joe Biden ran in 2020, he chose Kamala Harris for the same reason. And Kamala Harris, unable to find any Democrats in the Senate less capable than she, had to go to Minnesota to select the hapless Tim Walz. It’s a chain of bad decisions and sadly, the Democrats probably haven’t hit bottom yet.

This year’s presidential election is dragging these poor choices out into the light of day. As we grow ever closer to the consummation of this election season, Kamala Harris seems daily to find a new and interesting way to embarrass herself and the Democratic Party. Watch as she fails to answer the simplest of questions, one that she really ought to have been prepared for:

Note that she never answered the question. As for Donald Trump becoming “desperate,” that’s a canard; for one thing, Donald Trump has offered a lot of policy positions; Kamala Harris’ “plan” involves a lot of government spending that will explode housing prices and supercharge inflation; she does not and never has understood the most elementary principles of economics.

But most of all, it was a direct question, a simple question, and she retreated into talking points while never actually answering.

But wait! There’s more!

She could have said she looked at facts and figures and changed her mind, and at least would have made sense. But again, she evaded. The facts are this: The Biden administration has not been friendly towards the energy sector. For example: Earlier this year, the Biden administration shut down nearly half of Alaska’s North Slope to oil and gas extraction, a move that raised energy prices and cost jobs in some of the Great Land’s poorest areas. Harris never mentions those actions. And the impact on Americans at the gasoline pump remains dire. In 2020, the average gasoline price, adjusted for inflation, was $2.74 per gallon; today, it is $3.75, and that’s something Harris has not and cannot address.

My colleague Nick Arama told us on Thursday about Vice President Harris’ clumsy remarks delivered while she was touring areas damaged by Hurricane Helene:

Nick writes:

But in the face of all the devastation that has happened in the region, what Harris had to say seemed to be pitifully lacking.

Just as Biden did in Maui after the huge fire there when he promised $700, Harris promised a paltry sum of $750 payment to people, some of whom may just have lost everything.

If you lost your home, that would barely pay for a few days in a hotel and food for a family. And you can apply for it online, she said. Assuming you had power.

Many sounded off on this statement from Harris, raising questions like how much money has been given to Ukraine? Or to all kinds of services and assistance for illegal aliens? $750 is a pittance by comparison.

It was a pitiful response by the Harris/Biden administration. It was a pitiful statement by Kamala Harris. In fact, it was the latest in quite a progression of clueless statements from the vice president.

If there is any desperation setting in anywhere on the campaign trail, it’s with the Harris/Walz team. Kamala Harris daily shows herself to be inarticulate and ill-informed; Tuesday’s vice presidential debate contrasted a nervous, pop-eyed Tim Walz against the cool, collected, and informed JD Vance. The polls are starting to show some momentum, and at the moment, it’s not to the D team’s advantage.

We have a little over a month to go. Watch for the Harris/Walz camp to become more unhinged.
