National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan described Iran’s missile attack on Israel on Tuesday as a “significant escalation.”

President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris viewed the situation unfold from the White House Situation Room as U.S. warships fired interceptors to shoot down missiles that Iran launched, Sullivan said at the White House.

“In short, based on what we know at this point, this attack appears to have been defeated and ineffective,” Sullivan said. “The word ‘fog of war’ was invented for a situation like this. This is a fluid situation.”

Sullivan did not elaborate on the next steps the U.S. and Israel would take but said there would be consequences for Iran.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the U.S. sanctions against Iran would remain in place.

“You’ll hear more from us,” she said.
