A Texas charity event has gone viral after a winning bid ended in a smashed guitar autographed by Taylor Swift.

A video from the Ellis County Wild Game Dinner event is making the rounds on social media thanks to one man’s acceptance of his winning bid prize: an Eras Tour-style guitar signed by Swift.

The man approached the front of the room at the Waxahachie, Texas event, purportedly to retrieve the instrument that he reportedly paid $4,000 for in the charity auction. But the emcee handed him a hammer along with the guitar, as seen in videos.

“I see the guy grab a hammer off the stage,” JD Cobb told WFAA about the video he shot of the now-viral moment. “When I started video-ing it, I thought it was a joke.”

The man proceeded to hammer the guitar as he was cheered on by others in attendance.

Amid laughs and enthusiastic cheers from the crowd, the man continued his attack, at one point lifting up the guitar as if to smash it to the ground before changing his mind.

“You don’t need the hammer. Smash it on the ground,” a man yelled.

According to its website, the annual charity event was established in 2018 and is “committed to supporting agricultural and rural education to the youth of Ellis County” by “offering scholarships, animal and ag mechanics project grants, and purchasing projects at Ellis County Youth Expo.”

A spokesperson for the event held this year at the Ellis County Expo Center in Waxahachie confirmed to WFAA that the man in the video bought the guitar for around $4,000 and that it was signed by Swift.

“The spokesperson claimed there was no malice behind the smashing, though he did hint at the fact it had something to do with Swift’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris. They also confirmed that Taylor Swift has never used the guitar,” WFAA reported.

Not surprisingly, Swift’s fans did not find anything humorous about the moment, with many complaining that the spectacle was immature and that the $4,000 could have been used for charity. In fact, proceeds from the charity event reportedly went to the Future Farmers of America.

“It has been surprising to me how big of a deal people are making it out to be. It wasn’t meant to be mean or malicious,” Ellis County Wild Game spokesperson Craig Meier told WFAA. “He was just making a lighthearted statement showing disapproval of people in the entertainment industry trying to influence politics.”

“It was just a funny thing that happened at our annual event. The crowd thought it was hilarious,” Meier said in a statement. “The important thing is that 100% of the money raised goes directly to local youth and agricultural education programs. At the end of the day, the kids win and will benefit from this.”

Ellis County overwhelmingly voted for former President Donald Trump in 2020 and 2016. After Trump debated with Vice President Kamala Harris, Swift announced her highly anticipated endorsement of the Democrat nominee, saying Harris “is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos.”

“I’ve done my research, and I’ve made my choice. Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make. I also want to say, especially to first-time voters: Remember that in order to vote, you have to be registered! I also find it’s much easier to vote early,” she wrote in the Instagram post that included links for registering to vote.
