Verizon users reported widespread outages across the country on Monday morning following a network “issue,” which limited phones to “SOS mode.”
A website with ongoing real-time updates on data related to both internet and phone services, known as “DownDetector,” revealed that there were over 100,000 reported incidents of outages by 10 a.m. ET.
“During the incident we received reports from Birmingham, Foley, Mobile, Montgomery, Pelham, Phenix City, Valley, Bella Vista, Benton, Brookland, Des Arc, Fayetteville, Heber Springs, Hot Springs Village, Washington, Dover, Wilmington, Apopka, Beverly Hills, Brandon and 1021 other cities,” Outage.Report stated, another website tracking the Verizon outage.
Users reported outages from New York to Los Angeles, although the outages were mostly occurring on the east coast.
“We are aware of an issue impacting service for some customers. Our engineers are engaged and we are working quickly to identify and solve the issue,” Verizon News responded on X.
Rather than having normal cellular reception, users were reportedly stuck with their phones on SOS mode, which allows users to still be able to make emergency phone calls by connecting to other carriers.
“The cool thing about Twitter is that you can see if anyone else is having some sort of issue the same time as you are, which is why I’m glad I’m not alone in Verizon being down at the moment lol. Thought it was just me,” one user wrote on X, which received over 100,000 views as other users engaged with the post.
Another X user, a Donald Trump parody account, utilized the fiasco to make a lighthearted joke, showcasing an AI generated image of the former president up on a Verizon phone tower, fixing the outage.
“Donald Trump spotted climbing and fixing a Verizon phone tower after the national outage,” the user joked.
Additionally, other users took the time to question why mainstream media outlets were not covering the outage as Verizon users in North Carolina are currently suffering disastrous conditions following major flooding, which has already claimed almost 100 lives.
Due to the flooding, Verizon patrons in the disaster zone may require life saving communications, which would clearly be more difficult without having access to their phone service.
“How come not a single mainstream media network is talking about the massive nationwide @Verizon SOS outage the day before a major PORT STRIKE and while millions of Americans are without power and are unaccounted for?” Laura Loomer, a right-wing media personality, wrote on X.
