Former President Donald Trump got the ringing endorsement of a mayor running a Muslim-majority city in Michigan.

Democrat Amer Ghalib, the mayor of the Detroit-area suburb Hamtramck, announced his endorsement of the Republican presidential nominee on Sunday, calling it “the right choice for this critical time.”

Despite disagreeing with Trump on some issues, Ghalib admitted in a post on Facebook that the former president is a “man of principles” and his post garnered a response from Trump himself. Trump also shared Ghalib’s endorsement on his Truth Social platform.

“Let me be clear, so our expectations are realistic. President Trump and I may not agree on everything, but I know he is a man of principles,” wrote the mayor of the only U.S. city governed entirely by Muslims.

“Though it’s looking good, he may or may not win the election and be the 47th president of the United States, but I believe he is the right choice for this critical time. I’ll not regret my decision no matter what the outcome would be, and I’m ready to face the consequences.” the Yemeni American mayor added.

“For this, and for many other reasons, I announce my support and endorsement for the former, and hopefully, the next president of the United States, Donald Trump,” he concluded, adding, “Now, let the Caravan begin its journey. This is just the starting point.”

Ghalib recently told The Detroit News that the former president “knew a lot about me before the meeting,” referring to a private meeting between the two last week in Flint in the battleground state of Michigan.

“We talked about various topics including the debates, the polls updates, the statistics of votes in Michigan and Wayne County, the Arab American concerns and the Yemeni Americans in particular. We also talked about the situation in Yemen,” Ghalib said.

Trump was impressed with the mayor and told Breitbart News on Sunday about the endorsement.

“I was very impressed with him and he was a very big fan of the Trump administration because he saw no wars — outside of defeating ISIS, but I inherited that — but there were no wars,” Trump said. “There was no October 7. There was no Russian attack on Ukraine. He sees that and he told me — he saw a world that was at peace. Now, we have a world that’s going to end up in World War 3 and I can stop that. I’m the only one that’s going to stop that.”

Asked by the outlet if he would consider doing a rally or other campaign event in the Muslim-run city, Trump said,“The answer is if the opportunity presents itself I would do that.”

“It can’t remain the way it is now with the hatred that’s going around,” he added.
