Former President Donald Trump suggested Oprah Winfrey was “embarrassed” and had to “disguise” her reactions after interviewing Vice President Kamala Harris.

“Something’s wrong.”

The training wheels may have come off after her premiere campaign interview alongside running mate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, but the guardrails remained firmly in place to shield her from scrutiny ahead of Election Day. Despite softball sit downs with corporate media allies, the vice president’s responses, by the former president’s assessment, still left Oprah wanting “to hide under the table.”

Shortly after arriving on stage at a rally in Wilmington, North Carolina, the GOP leader brought up the Oprah-hosted “Unite for America Rally” as the latest example of Harris appearing unfit for office as he asserted, “She’s not competent to be president.”

“I don’t want to be rude. She’s not competent to be president,” he repeated to the crowd. “Did you see her on Oprah?…That’s not gonna be president. Oprah didn’t know what the hell to do. Oprah was, like, embarrassed. She wanted to hide under the table, but she’s a professional and she was able to sort of disguise it. No, she wanted to go right under the table.”

The riffing had Trump asking, “She’s just, I mean, how this happened — explain it to me, please! How did this happen?”

“We all saw what happened and we see what happened. Kamala was a total disaster yesterday and every other interview, she’s been just a free fall. I don’t know what the hell’s going on. She can’t do an interview. She doesn’t want to do ’em. Something’s wrong,” he added before turning rally-goers’ attention to a screen to watch a clip of Harris repeatedly using the word “story.”

As had been reported, while the Oprah event had primed corporate media for typical fawning reviews that advanced their narrative, the host herself had not been so successful in covering her real time reactions to the meandering word salads dished out by Harris that found her seeking clarity on actual answers.

It remained unlikely that the 2024 edition of the basement campaign would see any changes as Keisha Lance Bottoms, a senior adviser for Harris, made excuses to CNN’s Jake Tapper for the vice president’s limited interviews.

The anchor made note of her rallies Friday before stating, “Yet she’s not sitting down for regular interviews, or fielding questions from the press, certainly not to the degree that her counterpart, Donald Trump is. Why? Why is she not doing more interviews to talk about her policies and answer some of the questions that voters have about her policies and her change on her views on some of them?”

Bottoms replied in part, “Well, Jake, she’s done interviews, and I know that we would love or you would love to see her sit down every single day with CNN and do interviews, but it’s that she’s a very busy person. She’s the vice president as well as the candidate, and we heard her today talk about her views on these policies. It may not be in the format that the media would like.”
