Republican Austin Theriault, a professional stock car racing driver, is slightly ahead of incumbent Democratic Rep. Jared Golden in the first public poll of Maine’s closley-watched 2nd District House race.

According to the results of the poll conducted by Portland-based Pan Atlantic Research, Theriault has 47% compared to 44% for Golden. In the poll of 800 voters, 9% were undecided on a candidate. The survey has a statewide margin of error of 3.5%.

A loss for Golden would be a major setback in the Democrats’ quest to take back the House majority in November.
