ABC News anchor Linsey Davis, who acted as a moderator during the September 10 presidential debate, revealed the reason she felt compelled to fact-check the former president.

Davis sat with the Los Angeles Times following the debate, where she explained that CNN’s debate between former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden crafted her desire to hold Trump accountable.

“Davis, wearing pink glasses while speaking to The Times over breakfast at the Ritz Carlton in Philadelphia, said the decision to attempt to correct the candidates was in response to the June 27 CNN debate between Trump and President Biden, whose poor performance led to his exit from the race,” the article read. “‘People were concerned that statements were allowed to just hang and not [be] disputed by the candidate Biden, at the time, or the moderators,’ Davis said.”

Davis and David Muir, the other moderator, studied “each candidate’s body of work ahead of time” so they would be able to fact-check in real-time, though it appears that they missed a significant number of lies and misinformation from Vice President Kamala Harris. This includes her using a debunked Charlottesville conspiracy, Project 2025, and IVF claims.

Accusations that ABC News essentially fed Harris questions that were almost identical to those asked during the debate were quick to surface. It was reported that a whistleblower was preparing to release an affidavit to that effect, which allegedly also included the claim that the Harris campaign was given assurances that she would not be fact-checked, while Trump was.

ABC News eventually gave a statement to the Daily Beast denying these allegations.

“Absolutely not,” a spokesperson said. “Harris was not given any questions before the debate.”
