The Airport Fire in Orange County has torched upwards of 8,500 acres so far and is not yet under control.

More than 1,400 homes have been evacuated, and thousands of firefighters have been called into active duty to battle the blaze.

As for how the blaze started, well, it was reportedly from a crew using heavy equipment to … replace fire barriers:

‘The fire has been classified as unintentional,’ said Orange County Fire Authority Deputy Chief TJ McGovern.

‘The cause of the fire was a spark from heavy equipment being used to replace barriers out there. Two employees from Orange County public works were utilizing heavy equipment to place large boulders as barriers on Trabuco Creek Road to restrict access into the vegetation.’

Whoopsie!

Here’s another source if you need one:

An Orange County Public Works team putting together a project meant to help prevent fires is believed to have started the fire, reported Deseret Sun, a part of the USA TODAY Network.

The team was moving boulders in place to prevent motorcyclists and offroad vehicles from going into the dry brush on the canyon near the Cleveland National Forest.

A supervisor and crew member attempted to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher when they noticed smoke near one of the boulders.

You had one job, fellas!

One job!
