A Republican running for a state office was left bleeding after a random attack while hanging up campaign signs.

During the afternoon of August 29, Stanley Vaughan was hanging political signs about five miles away from the Las Vegas Strip when he was approached by someone he believed was homeless. The man, wielding a knife, demanded Vaughan turn over his wallet.

“I‘m so focused on getting the cable ties through and getting them through the fence, I wasn’t paying attention to pedestrians and stuff coming through here. I had my back turned. I turned around, caught me by surprise– then he started to lunge at me. I instinctively kicked him and he ran away,” the candidate said to KVVU.

Vaughan, an “Army veteran, martial arts enthusiast, and the security and police liaison for his homeowners’ association” according to The Blaze, was able to get away from the attacker, he didn’t escape unscathed.

“I jumped into the car, and then I’m realizing I’m bleeding,” he said, explaining that he raced home to his wife, who is a nurse, so she could treat his wound.

The candidate believes the man, who came across as “disoriented and hadn’t bathed in days” was homeless. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department believes that this was a one-off incident, and has not been able to tie the suspected attacker, who they were reportedly able to identify, to any other incidents.

Assemblyman David Orentlicher of District 20, Vaughan’s opponent, offered his support following the attack.

“I am very concerned and saddened to hear about the attack on Mr. Vaughan, and I wish him a speedy recovery. We all should be able to feel safe in our communities, and I am committed to continuing our work to reduce crime across Nevada. I hope the perpetrators are held accountable for their actions.”
