Social media has erupted after a photo of Tim Walz recirculated in which he was pictured outside a bakery which was forced to close during Minnesota’s COVID-19 lockdowns.

Following Walz’s visit to a Georgia bakery, Minnesota Sen. Tina Smith shared a post of herself and Walz outside Daube’s Cakes in Rochester from early 2020. “Can confirm,” wrote Smith in response to a Walz quote in a Fox 9 article which he said he had “no problem” picking out donuts.

There was just one little problem in them sharing that old photo.

Social media sleuths were quick to note that the bakery was forced to close after 32 years of operation in June 2020. At the time, Gov. Walz mandated draconian lockdown regulations on business across the state amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Worse still, it’s not the first time either Sen. Smith or Gov. Walz have made such an insensitive error. In 2022, Walz wished Smith a happy birthday by posting the same image years after Daube’s had closed.

Several social media users were disgusted by the naivety.

Others noted that Sen. Smith had tried to crop the bakery’s signage out of the image.
