A member of the Texas Democratic delegation attending the Democratic National Convention in Chicago was robbed at gunpoint early Wednesday morning while walking with a friend. The incident occurred near the Allegro Royal Sonesta Hotel Chicago, where the delegate was staying. The delegate’s identity remains undisclosed, as CWBChicago reported that it would not release the name of the victim.

According to reports, the incident happened around 2 a.m. when a gunman in a ski mask, driving a black Range Rover, approached the delegate and his friend. The assailant had already robbed a 25-year-old man of his wallet and hotel-room key in the same area before targeting the delegate. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in either incident.

The Chicago Police Department has identified the suspects as two Black men dressed in all-black clothing and wearing ski masks. The suspects are still at large, and the police have issued an alert, linking the robbers to another robbery around the same time as the delegate’s mugging. The pair is also believed to be responsible for two additional robberies early on Tuesday and Monday morning.

The Democratic National Convention has drawn a significant number of visitors and protesters to Chicago this week, contributing to a heightened security presence. On Tuesday night, over 50 people, mainly anti-Israel protesters, were arrested after clashing with police outside the Israeli Consulate. Among those arrested were three journalists who reportedly failed to disperse when ordered by law enforcement.

National Review reports that gun crime continues to plague Chicago. As of July 7, the city had reported over 1,200 shootings, a 12 percent increase compared to the same period last year. According to the Chicago Tribune, 364 people have been killed in the city so far this year, with 323 of those deaths caused by gunshot wounds. Despite the troubling numbers, 2024 has seen a decrease in homicides compared to 2023, with 34 fewer deaths reported. The decline follows a spike in homicides during 2020 and 2021, attributed to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite the unsettling incidents in Chicago, Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser gave a positive spin about the Democratic National Convention. In an interview with CNN on Thursday, Bowser described the event as a “perfect experience” for her party, stating, “I’m in Chicago right now — and it couldn’t be a more perfect experience for our delegates and our party.”
