A former staffer for then-first lady Melania Trump read some alleged text messages between the two during her appearance at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday.

Stephanie Grisham, who focused on alleged texts sent by Melania on Jan. 6, 2021, during her speech, served as a press aide for the 2016 Trump campaign, was White House press secretary from July 2019 to April 2020, and later worked as Melania Trump’s communications director and chief of staff.

After departing the White House, Grisham’s relationship with the Trump camp deteriorated. In her 2021 memoir, I’ll Take Your Questions Now: What I Saw at the Trump White House, she provided a critical insider’s view of the administration, accusing Donald Trump of creating a culture of fear and chaos.

On Tuesday night, as she endorsed Democrat Kamala Harris for president, Grisham referred to her communications with the former first lady during the Capitol riot, which are also detailed in her book, Newsweek reported.

“On Jan. 6, I asked Melania if we can at least tweet that ‘while peaceful protest is the right of every American, there’s no place for lawlessness or violence.’ She replied with one word … ‘no.’”

As Grisham displayed the text messages during her speech, Democrats applauded when she stated, “I became the first senior staffer to resign that day. I couldn’t be a part of the insanity any longer.”

Her decision to address the DNC shocked many Democrats, given her long history of staunch support for former President Trump.

“While I don’t agree with Vice President Harris on everything, I am proud to be supporting her because I know she will defend our freedoms and represent our nation with honesty and integrity,” Grisham told NBC News in a statement before her appearance.

“While Donald Trump continues to attack moderates and independents, the Harris-Walz campaign has made clear that there is a place in our coalition for voters who reject the extremism of Donald Trump and want to protect our democracy,” a Harris campaign official also told the outlet.

As White House press secretary, Grisham never held a single press conference during her tenure. Referencing that, she said Tuesday, “Unlike my boss, I never wanted to stand at that podium and lie. Now, here I am behind a podium advocating for a Democrat, and that’s because I love my country more than my party.”

Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung pointed Newsweek to a post on X from Jason Miller, Trump’s senior adviser, when asked for a comment. Miller reposted the official Trump War Room X account’s remark: “Disgruntled Press Secretary (Who Never Held a Press Briefing) Stephanie Grisham says she ‘really believes that’ Americans will be thinking of her and her ‘bravery’ when they are in the voting booth in November. (No one knows who she is).”

Grisham’s ‘apology’ tour began last year when she claimed she regretted her “cozy” relationship with Fox News.

During a March 2023 appearance on CNN Newsroom, anchor Jim Acosta discussed the potential Republican presidential candidates for the 2024 election with Grisham and Vanity Fair correspondent Molly Jong-Fast. Acosta mentioned the lawsuit Dominion Voting Systems filed against Fox News as the segment came to an end.

Acosta asked Grisham for her perspective on the close relationship between Fox News and the Trump administration during his time in office, pointing out that they often had similar “talking points” and Fox News hosts were frequent visitors to the White House, such as Laura Ingraham.

“It almost seemed as though there was a pretty cozy relationship between the White House and Fox, is that how you remember, and what do you recall from that experience?” Acosta asked, according to Mediaite.

Grisham acknowledged the close relationship between Fox News and the Trump administration, stating that it was “very cozy.” She further revealed that if she didn’t respond to calls from personalities like Jeanine Pirro or Sean Hannity, they would reach out directly to Trump.

“And then I would get a talking to for not speaking with them,” claimed Grisham. “I remember specifically working on a town hall that the president, the former president, did with Fox, and me having to talk directly with [Fox News CEO] Suzanne Scott about making sure that it was full in there.”

“We did work hand in hand with them,” Grisham said. “And that came at the president’s direction. If he didn’t like something, we were to immediately, you know, call Fox and have them fix it or try to make a new story out of it, etc.”
