On Thursday, President Biden delivered remarks on the release of Paul Whelan and Evan Gershkovich at the White House when he got into a strange exchange with a member of the press.

The moment occurred when Biden was asked about Trump’s claim that he could have negotiated the release of the hostages without giving anything to the Russians.

“President Trump has said repeatedly that he could’ve gotten the hostages out without giving anything in exchange, what do you think…” one reporter asked Biden before he hopped in.

“Why didn’t he do it when he was president?” Biden answered.

Two of the Americans released were originally captured during Biden’s presidency.

Handlers can be heard quickly ushering people out after the gaffe.

Watch the moment below:

“Anyone who questions why allies matter — they do. They matter,” Biden said, after the deal was brokered by a group of NATO countries and Russia.

“Today is a powerful example of why it’s vital to have friends in this world, friends you can trust, work with and depend upon, especially on matters of great consequence and sensitivity like this.”

“All told, Russia has released 16 prisoners. Eight Russians who were being held in the West will be sent home as well,” Biden said.
