HOAs are kind of like neighborhood police who like to dictate every part of your life and control what you do with the property you pay for. Not all HOAs are the same, as some will endlessly harass you with notices while others won’t think twice before taking you to court. This is probably why nearly 60 percent of people with an HOA dislike them and 30 percent feel their board has too much power, as they are often run by a bunch of irrelevant people on a power trip who enjoy making people miserable.

Some are more corrupt than others and some are run by a bunch of tyrants who think they can fine a cute old lady $100 for accidentally cutting her dues 20 cents, even though she tried to pay it the moment she found out.

According to WFTV:

Carolyn Babcock has been married to her husband for 64 years. During that time, he’s been in charge of paying the bills, but last year, he went into a nursing home, and Carolyn has been trying to navigate her way around the finances.

In January, Carolyn’s husband reminded her to pay a yearly homeowner’s association fee.

“I went right over to the office…I thought maybe they’d take my check,” Babcock recalled.

They refused to take her check and told her to mail it and pay a late fee, which she did…… or so she thought.

“So I came right home, did it right then, put it in the mailbox,” Babcock recalled. “She did say, ‘you may have a late fee.’”

And she did, so Babcock says she paid the late fee too, or so she thought. Babcock says she paid $43.50, but she missed a 20-cent interest fee on the line below and came up a little short.

When she realized the mistake, Babcock says she walked down to the office with her dime and two nickels, but they again wouldn’t accept them.

As a result, Babcock says she continues to rack up charges for her missed change, getting billed an extra $30 per month. She also continues to fight what she says is a ridiculous amount for an honest mistake.

And now they are trying to charge her nearly $100 for this honest mistake.

“I don’t feel that it’s right, absolutely not,” Babcock argued. “I said they can come and arrest me. Sorry, but who’s going pay $90 for a 20-cent interest?”

I support this act of civil disobedience, as this is far from reasonable. I wouldn’t even say anything over 20 cents if I were on the board, let alone to someone who has paid on time for over a decade. Honestly, demanding she fork over the 20 cents is a Karen thing to begin with, but the board far exceeded any HOA expectations.

‘This is crazy,” Babcock said. “Let’s stop this nonsense.”

There is nothing worse than a bunch of arrogant weirdos who love to tell others how to use their property, which is why HOAs are universally hated. But this goes far beyond someone haggling you on where to park, this is literal tyranny and no one should be here for that.
