Washington, D.C. – Ahead of Mother’s Day, U.S. Senators Katie Britt (R-AL), Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Kevin Cramer (R-ND) will introduce the More Opportunities for Moms to Succeed (MOMS) Act which seeks to address many of the challenges that pregnant, postpartum, and parenting mothers face, by providing genuine and empowering support. The MOMS Act is now one of multiple important pieces of legislation aimed at expanding the pro-life safety net like Senator Rubio’s Providing for Life Act and Standing with Moms Act, and Senator Cramer’s Unborn Child Support Act.
The MOMS Act would:
- Require the Department of Health and Human Services to establish a clearinghouse of relevant resources available for pregnant women.
- Establish a grant program to improve women’s access to prenatal and postpartum care, including equipment necessary for such care and access to telehealth appointments.
Susan B. Anthony President Marjorie Dannenfelser celebrated the bill in a statement:
“The MOMS Act ensures that pregnant, postpartum and parenting mothers across the country will have access to the resources and support they need to meet their goals and succeed. Most women facing an unplanned pregnancy would appreciate empowering support to give life to their children, instead of being pushed into abortions they don’t even want. Research shows that 60% of women who had an abortion would have preferred to give birth if they had received either more emotional support or had more financial security.
“Every child deserves love and a beautiful life. And every woman, no matter her situation or background, is deserving of the same. Let’s empower her by providing the resources and encouragement she needs to be the best version of herself and the best mother she can be. This is the kind of bill that should bring both sides of the aisle together. We are extremely grateful to Senator Britt, as well as Sen. Rubio, Sen. Cramer and other Senate leaders who are working hard to support mothers and their families at all stages of life, and we hope all their colleagues will join them.”
Daria Monroe, CEO of Women’s Hope Medical Clinic in Auburn, Alabama, stated in response to the Act:
“In so many cases, we’ve heard women who’ve experienced abortion say the words ‘if only.’ If only I had the money to raise a child. If only I had someone who believed in me. If only I had access to prenatal care. My center works to address this, providing services like pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, prenatal clinics, parenting education programs, diapers, full adoption services and more – all at no cost. We are so thankful for members of Congress like Senator Britt who stand for women and provide solutions at the federal level.”
