As a long-time entertainment reporter, I’ve witnessed countless changes in Hollywood over the years. But this latest move by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has me raising an eyebrow. They’ve just announced that 116 out of 323 eligible films have been excluded from the Best Picture category for the upcoming Oscars. That’s more than a third of the contenders, folks. Now, I understand the importance of representation in film. It’s a noble goal. But I can’t help but feel a twinge of concern when I see so many potentially worthy films being sidelined due to these new Representation and Inclusion Standards (RAISE). See the full list of diversity and inclusion guidelines here.

Among the casualties are some films that had real potential. Andrea Arnold’s “Bird” starring Barry Keoghan, Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut “Woman of the Hour,” and Michael Keaton’s first time in the director’s chair with “Knox Goes Away” – all out of the running. Even crowd-pleasers like “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” and the “Mean Girls” musical remake didn’t make the cut. It’s worth noting that some of these exclusions are due to filmmakers not attempting to qualify. Fair enough. But many others fell short of the new diversity and inclusion benchmarks. This is the second year these standards have been in place, and their impact is certainly being felt.

Don’t get me wrong – diversity in film has it’s role, but as someone who’s been covering this industry for years, I can’t help but wonder if the industry has lost sight of what makes a film truly great. Shouldn’t the story, the performances, the direction be the primary focus when we’re talking about “Best Picture”? I’ve always believed that the Oscars should celebrate the pinnacle of filmmaking artistry. While representation can undoubtedly be  a part of that, I worry that the studios are tipping the scales too far in one direction, and the Academy is risking overlooking truly exceptional films simply because they don’t tick all the right boxes. What a shame.

In the end, I hope we can find a balance. One that promotes diversity and inclusion in Hollywood, absolutely, but also one that doesn’t lose sight of the fundamental elements that make a film award-worthy. After all, isn’t the goal to recognize the very best in cinema, regardless of who made it or who’s in it? It will be interesting to see how these new standards continue to shape the landscape of award-worthy films. Hopefully we don’t forget what truly makes a picture the “Best.”
