While clearly a lesser level of concern, the Palisades wildfire tragedy is now affecting the sports world – particularly an NFL playoff game in Los Angeles.
As wildfires continue to rage across Southern California, the league is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety and continuation of its playoff schedule.
On Wednesday, the league announced a contingency plan for the upcoming NFC Wild Card game between the Los Angeles Rams and the Minnesota Vikings. It was initially set to take place at the Rams home, SoFi Stadium.
Los Angeles has been grappling with multiple wildfires, with three major fires burning from the Pacific coast to Pasadena. These fires have led to the evacuation of over 70,000 residents. They’ve destroyed more than 1,000 structures and tragically taken five lives.
Where Will LA’s NFL Playoff Game Be Played?
The Palisades wildfires have also significantly impacted air quality.
The Inglewood area, where SoFi Stadium is located, is currently registering an air quality index of 281, deemed “very unhealthy” by standards.
As of right now, the game between the Rams and Vikings is scheduled to proceed as planned at the Stadium. However, the league has prepared a backup plan should the conditions in that location become untenable due to the wildfires.
Reports indicate that 0% of these fires are currently contained.
State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, home to the Arizona Cardinals, has been designated as an alternative venue by the league.
Moving the location rather than postponing the contest ensures the game remains on schedule for Monday night. This maintains the integrity of the playoff timeline.

League Gives Thanks To First Responders
The NFL issued a statement indicating that they are closely monitoring the situation in LA. They added that they will keep the public up to date on any changes. They also thanked those fighting the fires.
“The NFL’s priority is the safety of the Los Angeles community,” the league’s statement reads. “We are grateful for the tireless efforts of the first responders. Our hearts are with Los Angeles and everyone affected by the fires.
“We will continue to closely monitor developments in the area and will remain in contact with public officials, both clubs and the NFLPA,” it adds.
On Wednesday, the Rams also issued a statement expressing thoughts for those affected by the wildfires.
“Our hearts are with those affected by the Eaton Fire in the Altadena/Pasadena area and the first responders protecting our community. Be safe,” the team said.
Please pray for all those impacted by these wildfires.
