It looks like America will avert a near disaster and the leader getting “full credit” is a slap in the face to the Biden administration.
Weeks ahead of Donald Trump’s Inauguration, the longshoremen’s union and port operators reached a deal that will likely avoid a massive port strike.
The United States Maritime Alliance (USMX), the group representing ship line and terminal operators and the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) reached a tentative deal on Wednesday that otherwise would have port workers go on strike on Jan. 16, CNN reported.
ILA President Harold Daggett is calling President-elect Trump the “key” to helping his members “secure the greatest contract.”
But the good news doesn’t end there.

“The leader of the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) has a message to incoming President Donald J. Trump: “You have proven yourself to be one of the best friends of working men and women in the United States,” a Facebook post from the ILA stated.
Daggett and his son, ILA Executive Vice President Dennis A. Daggett, met with Trump at Mar-a-Lago on December 12th to hammer out a deal that would offer protections for the union’s 85,000 members against automation.
“President Trump clearly demonstrated his unwavering support for our ILA union and longshore workers with his statement “heard round the world” backing our position to protect American longshore jobs against the ravages of automated terminals,” said ILA President Daggett. “President Trump’s bold stance helped prevent a second coast wide strike at ports from Maine to Texas that would have occurred on January 15, 2024, if a tentative agreement was not reached.”
Trump spoke on the phone with representatives of the USMX in the presence of the Daggetts during the mid-December meeting. He then posted a statement in support of ILA on Truth Social, according to the ILA.
“There has been a lot of discussion having to do with ‘automation on United States docks,” Trump wrote. “I’ve studied automation and know just about everything there is to know about it. The amount of money saved is nowhere near the distress, hurt and harm it causes for American Workers, in this case, our Longshoremen. Foreign companies have made a fortune in the U.S. by giving them access to our markets. They shouldn’t be looking for every last penny knowing how many families are hurt.”
Now, Haggett sees Trump as “one of the greatest friends of organized labor and champion of working men and women,” the post went to say.
“He’s a hero to our ILA union and members,” said the ILA leader. “President Trump gets full credit for our successful tentative Master Contract agreement,” said ILA President Daggett.
For its part, someone from the Biden White House issued a statement praising the deal but made no mention of an important player in the negotiation.
“Today’s tentative agreement between the International Longshoremen’s Association and the United States Maritime Alliance shows that labor and management can come together to benefit workers and their employers,” Biden reportedly said on Wednesday. “I applaud the dockworkers’ union for delivering a strong contract.”
