President-elect Donald Trump told reporters on Thursday that he is working on arranging a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss ending the war in Ukraine.

Trump, who was speaking to the press at his Mar-a-Lago resort, where he was hosting a group of Republican governors, said he has spoken with other world leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, but has not spoken to Putin so far.

“He wants to meet. And we’re setting it up,” Trump said, according to The Hill. “President Putin wants to meet. He’s said that even publicly, and we have to get that war over with. That’s a bloody mess.”

Trump did not provide a timeline for when the meeting would take place, but the comment comes after Trump suggested during the presidential debate last June that he could end the war in Ukraine before taking office. The war between Russia and Ukraine began when Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Reuters earlier Thursday that there has been no formal meeting request so far, but Putin would welcome Trump’s desire to meet.
