The former Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce just got some bad news days after the premiere of his new ESPN show They Call It Late Night with Jason Kelce. Unfortunately for him, the debut episode didn’t shine in the ratings department.

Kelce’s Ratings ‘Not Particularly Good’

Puck sports business expert John Ourand spoke out to say that the ratings for the debut episode of Kelce’s Friday night/Saturday morning talk show were “not particularly good.” According to him, the first episode, which aired at 1 a.m., drew just 290,000 viewers.

That same time slot had 700,000 viewers two weeks earlier. However, it should be noted that this was during the Notre Dame-Indiana College Football Playoff game, which incentivized more ESPN fans to tune in later at night.

Kelce’s Late Night Talk Show

Kelce, 37, is due to run five episodes of this late night talk show, which he’s filming at Union Transfer, a music venue in Philadelphia.

And it wasn’t for lack of star power: the debut episode featured the one and only Charles Barkley, who is usually a good time no matter what the topic is. Kelce’s wife Kylie also appeared on the premiere of the late night talk show.

Many viewers were stunned by just how many expletives Kelce used in his opening monologue. He spoke afterwards to defend the foul language.

“We really wanted the language to be real and authentic to me,” Kelce told NBC News. “We overdid it a little bit today to kind of prep the audience on what to expect. I think the F-bombs was the one thing where I was told, we might want to be a little bit cautious there but, listen, we want to give you range to be who you are.”

Kelce went on to make it clear that he knows that beyond five episodes, ESPN has made no guarantees that this show will continue.

“We really just wanted to try something fun to do and I think everybody was on board to experiment and see what happens,” Kelce explained. “I do think there’s room for this, especially within the football season.”

Kelce Stays Busy – Offers Postgame Analysis Of His Talk Show

Kelce retired from the NFL last year. He has since become an ESPN analyst on Monday Night Countdown while also contributing to playoff coverage for the network. On top of that, Kelce co-hosts the “New Heights” podcast with his younger brother, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis. The podcast has skyrocketed in popularity ever since Travis began dating Taylor Swift in September of 2023.

After the debut episode of his late night show, Kelce tried to analyze it just as he would as an Eagles player in the postgame locker room.

“It’s game day,” he said. “Plenty of errors, just like a game. Plenty of things to clean up. But just so happy with how it went.”

Judging by the abysmal ratings, however, it seems that Kelce may have made too many “errors” on this one. Only time will tell if Kelce is able to make a comeback and get his late night show back on the rails!
