A recent announcement from the Canadian prime minister set him up for ridicule after an attempt to talk tough on the odds of joining the United States.

Justin Trudeau, the “Swiftie” leader of the Liberal Party, announced his intention to resign from that role in addition to stepping down as prime minister when a new leader is selected. The move, weeks after prostrating himself to President-elect Donald Trump, teed up a takedown from Elon Musk when Trudeau suggested there wasn’t “a snowball’s chance in hell” that the Great White North might become the 51st state.

On the same day as the announced resignation, Trump posited the idea once more, prompting Trudeau to sound off on Tuesday, “There isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States. Workers and communities in both our countries benefit from being each other’s biggest trading and security partner.”

Hours later, the world’s richest man took a swipe and wrote on X, “Girl, you’re not the governor of Canada anymore, so doesn’t matter what you say.”

Ahead of his return to the White House, the president-elect spoke about a number of expansion opportunities that included Greenland and the Panama Canal but drew a line in the sand with America’s neighbor to the north.

Shortly after his victory against Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump got to work on contending with the border crisis by threatening a 25% tariff on both Canada and Mexico if they refused to curb illegal entries into the United States on their end and aid in tamping down on smuggling operations.

When Trudeau, who’d visited the president-elect at his Mar-a-Lago residence, reportedly argued such a tariff would “kill the Canadian economy completely,” Trump was said to have replied, “So your country can’t survive unless it’s ripping off the U.S. to the tune of $100 billion?”

It was then the suggestion of making Canada the 51st state had been presented with Trudeau maintaining a leadership role as governor, an idea the president-elect revisited Monday when he posted on Truth Social, “Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State. The United States can no longer suffer the massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned. If Canada merged with the U.S., there would be no Tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threat of the Russian and Chinese Ships that are constantly surrounding them. Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!”

Trump has since offered variations on a new map of the United States as he also suggested the Gulf of Mexico be renamed the Gulf of America.

Some, like CNN’s Van Jones, suggested that adding Canada to the union would prove a benefit for the left as it would “be a huge blue state,” and Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D) welcomed the idea of further expansion along with two other projected Democratic strongholds when he said on X Tuesday, “If it’s the choice of the people of Greenland to join the greatest county on earth, I would welcome them as our 53rd state, right after we admit Puerto Rico and Washington DC as states.”

Meanwhile, social media users celebrated the pile onto Trudeau who was blasted weeks earlier for attending a Taylor Swift concert while riots raged in Montreal.
