As RedState reported earlier, President-Elect Donald Trump held a post-certification press conference Tuesday from Mar-a-Lago

At the presser, a wide range of topics were discussed, including the announcement of big new investments in data centers across the country courtesy of DAMAC Properties, and Trump’s desire to rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America.

“We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America,” Trump proclaimed. “What a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate. It’s appropriate. And Mexico has to stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country.”

Also talked about were Trump’s plans for Greenland and the Panama Canal. In response to questions from reporters, the incoming soon-to-be-president indicated he would not rule out using economic and/or military pressure, stating “I can say this, we need them for economic security. The Panama Canal was built for our military.”

While talking about the Panama Canal, Trump also opined twice during the presser, saying that in his view the late President Jimmy Carter’s Panama Canal deal via the Panama Canal Treaties was a “disgrace” and is what arguably cost him the 1980 election:

“Giving the Panama Canal is why Jimmy Carter lost the election, in my opinion, more so maybe than the hostages. The hostages were a big deal. But if you remember, and nobody wants to talk about the Panama Canal now because, you know, it’s inappropriate, I guess, but – because it’s a bad part of the Carter legacy – he was a good man. Look, he was a good man. I knew him a little bit and he was a very fine person, but that was a big mistake.

Giving the Panama Canal to Panama was a very big mistake. We lost 38,000 people. It cost us the equivalent of a trillion dollars, maybe more than that. Probably the most expensive  – they say it was the most expensive structure, if we call it a structure, which I guess you can, ever built. And giving that away was a horrible thing, and I believe that’s why Jimmy Carter lost the election even more so than the hostages. Those two things.”

Watch:

Because Thursday is the National Day of Mourning for Carter, and because Carter is being prepared to lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda, a fauxfended member of the press corps asked Trump in so many words if he was maybe being a little insensitive.

Trump responded accordingly, noting he was criticizing the policy and not the man while also reminding reporters that he was not the one who brought up the issue during the presser – the media did.

Watch:

It’s natural for people to debate the legacies of elected officials (and former elected officials) in the aftermath of their passing, and Carter’s legacy is no exception to that rule.

And let’s face it, there would be no “appropriate” time in the media’s eyes for Trump to talk about it because in their view Carter was a better man and president than Trump, which is the real reason why they didn’t like Trump mentioning his issues with the Panama Canal deal during the press conference.

Further, make no mistake about it: If this was Trump’s passing, the mainstream media, Democrats, and NeverTrumpers wouldn’t have even let 60 seconds go by after news broke before giving their unvarnished opinions on the 45th and 47th President of the United States.

As far as I’m concerned, Democrats and the press lost the civility/decency/new tone argument long ago, and have about as much credibility to lecture on the topic as Bill Clinton does on the sanctity of marriage.  Just sayin’.
