The Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday night set two dates for former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi’s confirmation hearings, which will take place next week.
President-elect Donald Trump nominated Bondi to the position in November, after former Florida GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz withdrew his name from consideration. Bondi was Florida’s first female attorney general, and worked as a prosecutor for over 20 years. If confirmed, she would replace outgoing Attorney General Merrick Garland.
Bondi, who also served as Trump’s personal lawyer during his first impeachment trial, is slated to appear in front of the committee on Wednesday, January 15, and Thursday, January 16, according to Politico.
The former Florida attorney general is considered a less controversial choice for Republicans who opposed Gaetz. Incoming Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley last month claimed Bondi is a “well-qualified” candidate to lead the Justice Department.
Grassley also said on Monday that he hopes to pass Bondi’s nomination out of the committee by the week of January 20, and will then focus on confirming Bondi’s potential deputy attorney general, Todd Blanche, followed by Trump’s pick for FBI Director Kash Patel.
Although Bondi is considered a more popular choice among Republicans, she could face strong opposition by Senate Democrats. Senate Judiciary Ranking Member Dick Durbin said he still has concerns about her after a meeting on Wednesday.
“The role of the Attorney General is to oversee an independent Justice Department that upholds the rule of law and is free of undue political influence,” Durbin said in a statement. “Given Ms. Bondi’s responses to my questions, I remain concerned about her ability to serve as an Attorney General who will put her oath to the Constitution ahead of her fealty to Donald Trump.”
Senate Republicans are also hoping to hold confirmation hearings for Trump’s nominee for Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Agriculture secretary pick Brooke Rollins, and Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator pick Lee Zeldin next week.
