A tunnel believed to be intended for cartel smuggling operations was discovered near the US-Mexico border in San Luis Río Colorado, south of Yuma, Arizona. The incomplete tunnel was found during a joint investigation by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Sonora State Police using drone technology.

The tunnel was confirmed by Mexican authorities as a “narco tunnel” likely intended for drug and human smuggling. This marks the third such tunnel discovered near Yuma in 2024, according to a report by AZ Family.

While the specific cartel behind the operation has not been confirmed, the DEA’s 2024 Drug Threat Assessment indicates that the Sinaloa Cartel frequently employs tunnels in this region. Some tunnels are reportedly highly sophisticated, featuring electricity and ventilation systems.

“The Sinaloa Cartel exerts near-total control over the border region south of Arizona, giving the cartel easy access to the San Luis Rio Colorado and Nogales [ports of entry],” the DEA said.

Anne Milgram, DEA Administrator, explained, “At the heart of the synthetic drug crisis are the Sinaloa and Jalisco cartels and their associates, who DEA is tracking world-wide. The suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, and money launderers all play a role in the web of deliberate and calculated treachery orchestrated by these cartels.” […]
