Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) surprised no one as he claimed changes to the Republican Party left him feeling he is  “probably closer to a Democrat now.”

The rabid critic of President-elect Donald Trump has repeatedly shown he is not aligned with the GOP or its incoming leader but opted to come clean on his political leanings during a Forbes interview.

“The thing that surprised me most with this, and here’s a funny thing about the last couple of years, I’ve built these new alliances, like I’ve realized I’m probably closer to a Democrat now because of how the Republican Party has changed,” Kinzinger mused.

“The Democrats are now the party that’s defending America’s role in the world, defending Ukraine, which I’m really passionate about,” added the former lawmaker who endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election and even spoke at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

Kinzinger was one of 10 Republican House members who voted to impeach Trump over the so-called “Insurrection” on Jan. 6, 2021, and Trump’s alleged role in the events at the U.S. Capitol. He also served with fellow disgraced GOP Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), on the sham Jan. 6 committee and was praised by now-Sen. Adam Schiff for showing “great courage” in doing so.

“I knew there was going to be violence. I predicted violence, and so I went in with my gun for the first time,” he said in the interview, speaking about Jan. 6 events. “I am usually armed if I’m out in public, but for the first time ever, I took my gun to the Capitol.”

Keeping up his anti-Trump rhetoric, Kinzinger said he was “pissed” about the results of the 2024 presidential election and is sure voters will see the error of their ways.

“I think the Republican Party is toast for a while. Everything is a pendulum, and I honestly believe that Trumpism doesn’t survive past these four years. While I’m pissed Trump won, had he lost, I couldn’t have put an expiration date on Trumpism,” he said.

“It could have been right then and could have been 10 years from now,” he added. “The only good thing about Trump winning is that in four years, people are going to want nothing to do with him or his movement anymore.”

Kinzinger’s epiphany about being more aligned with Democrats was mocked on social media where many related that this was no surprise at all.
