Only days after Christmas, 52-year-old Robert Loren Bacon had reportedly been at the Bavarian Inn Lodge in Frankenmuth, Michigan where he was meeting his 13-year-old and 15-year-old daughters with their grandma. More than a week after disappearing when he’d intended to move his car, a dive team recovered the father’s body in a nearby river suspecting a “drowning” had occurred.
“The preliminary cause of death appears to be drowning, but a final determination will be made by the Saginaw County Medical Examiner’s Office,” came a statement from the Frankenmuth Police Department. “The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mr. Bacon’s death is ongoing.”
Detailing the various law enforcement agencies and other first responders that had aided in the search after Bacon had been officially reported missing on Dec. 30, the police had explained that, “On January 4, 2025, at approximately 2:00 PM, the body of Robert Bacon was located and recovered by the Dive Teams in the Cass River near Heritage Park in Frankenmuth.”
“I have no words to describe how we feel we are so sad I just want to say thank you to everyone that helped look for Robert thank you to all that prayed for us and that are continuing to pray for us,” wrote Melissa McLenna, Bacon’s ex-wife, on social media Sunday.
Amid the investigation of the man’s disappearance, McLenna had spoken with WNEM and expressed, “My poor kids, our kids, I don’t know what to tell them. They ask, ‘Mom, have they found him yet?’ and I just say, ‘No, we’re still looking.’”
She had conveyed to the outlet that, on the day in question, “He came about 6:40 p.m., went to the hotel room to change out of his shoes and slides, was going to meet our daughter down at the pool area. Said he had to move his car because he was on the further entrance from where their room was.”
“From there, [investigators] have video showing him going to the fun center after leaving the hotel room, never coming back to his car,” said McLenna. “They don’t have any video showing he exited the building. However, there are exits without cameras.”
The ex-wife had also explained to WNEM that attempts to reach Bacon by cellphone went “straight to voice mail.
Prior to locating the decedent, investigators had detailed that there had been no activity on any of Bacon’s financial accounts and an initial search of the Cass River by the Saginaw County Sheriff’s Department’s Dive Team using a sonar boat had proven fruitless, locating only debris when equipment had returned an image.
