Democrat hopes of being able to delay the certification of President-elect Donald J. Trump’s electoral victory were dashed when the expected chaos over the election of a new House speaker failed to materialize.

In something of a shock, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) easily retained control of the gavel by winning enough support from his fellow Republicans to keep his job on the first vote after two holdouts changed their minds, a big disappointment for the disloyal opposition and their friends in the media.

After securing the leadership of the GOP-controlled House, Johnson pledged to immediately get down to the business of downsizing the government, a top priority of the incoming Trump administration.

“As heirs to the American Revolution and the descendants of patriots who defied tyranny in the coming months, we are going to pass legislation to roll back the totalitarian 4th branch of government known as the administrative state,” Johnson declared as Democrats in the chamber sat glumly.

“We’re going to drastically cut back the size and scope of government. We’re going to return the power back to the people. And in coordination with President Trump and his administration, we are going to create a leaner, faster, and more efficient federal workforce,” he continued. “We need to do that.”

“Our people do not deserve to be ruled by millions of bureaucrats they’ve never voted for, never met, and can never hold accountable,” Johnson added. “They deserve a government that is led by those they’ve elected to lead.”

“That is how Article One is supposed to work. That was the idea of the Congress, and we will return to that principle,” he said. “The American people have called on us to reject business as usual and throw out the status quo. We must and we will heed their call.”

Trump reacted to Johnson’s win after he strongly endorsed him before the vote.

“Congratulations to Speaker Mike Johnson for receiving an unprecedented Vote of Confidence in Congress. Mike will be a Great Speaker, and our Country will be the beneficiary. The People of America have waited four years for Common Sense, Strength, and Leadership. They’ll get it now, and America will be greater than ever before!” Trump wrote in a Friday post to Truth Social.

“Republicans have a real opportunity in the next two years to make meaningful spending reforms to eliminate trillions in waste, fraud, and abuse, and end the weaponization of government. Along with advancing President Trump’s America First agenda, I will lead the House Republicans to reduce the size and scope of the federal government, hold the bureaucracy accountable, and move the United States to a more sustainable fiscal trajectory,” Johnson said in a lengthy post to X, outlining steps to implement Trump’s America First agenda.
