New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers has admitted both to the world and to himself that Sunday’s season finale against the Miami Dolphins at MetLife Stadium could be his last game in his legendary career.

Rodgers Knows This Could Be His Last Game

Rodgers was first drafted twenty years ago, in 2005. Since taking over the starting job for the Green Bay Packers in 2008, he has put up unprecedented, gaudy numbers and been a human highlight reel. All good things though, come to an end.

And this may be the end for Rodgers.

When asked if he’s considered that this could be his final game, Rodgers replied, “Yeah, of course.”

Rodgers, 41, went on to tell ESPN that he plans to decide whether or not he’ll play in 2025 before free agency in March. He added that he’s got “a lot of gratitude for the last 20 years” of playing professional football. Rodgers is specifically thankful for all the coaches and teammates he’s had along the way, from playing high school football to playing now with the Jets.

“This game has given me a lot,” he acknowledged. “I’ve given a lot back to it, and I’m thankful for it. I won’t be thinking about that on game day. I’ll just be enjoying this. I’m trying to stay in the moment, but, of course, it’s been a long career. I’m really proud of what I’ve been able to be a part of, what I’ve been able to accomplish, and I’m also looking forward to a nice mental and physical rest.”

Though he appears to be interested in returning to the Jets, Rodgers seems resigned to the fact that the team’s new regime may not want him after this subpar season. Indeed, the Jets have gone 4-12 since beginning the season with hopes of going to the Super Bowl.

“I’m just more resigned to the reality of the situation,” Rodgers explained. “I think there’s going to be change here, and if I’m a part of the change, then I just want to make sure everybody knows I have nothing but gratitude for my time here.”

Rodgers Has Loved Playing For The Jets

Rodgers began playing for the Jets in April of 2023. In this interview, he described his time with the team as being “the best two years of my life.”

“I’m disappointed about the performance with myself and as a team, but really thankful for the opportunity,” Rodgers continued. “If I feel good coming back and they want to make another run at this, that’d be fantastic, but I’m not naive to the situation we’re in.”

During this chaotic season, the Jets fired coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas. They are still looking for replacements for them both. It is believed that whoever takes over the team will be eager to replace Rodgers as quarterback as well.

Despite everything that has transpired this season, Rodgers still believes he could have a good 2025 season, if he can just get some rest.

“I need a break, mentally,” he concluded.

This comes one month after Rodgers expressed his hopes of returning to play for the Jets next season.

“I just redid my house here in Jersey,” Rodgers said in December. “My goal was to play a few more years here. We’ll see I’d like to be healthy, I’d like to end on my feet. I’d like to play well and feel like I’m wanted back. If not, I will not be offended, I won’t be upset. I’ll be so thankful either way whatever happens here.”

Only time will tell if Sunday ends up being Rodgers’ last game! It will certainly be interesting to see how this turns out for him.
