Happy New Year, Zambia! You now have 13 prisoners on the loose thanks to this prison officer.

Yes, this man thought it would be nice to let a bunch of prisoners free so they could celebrate 2025. Turns out, not many of them came back.

And it was New Year’s Eve, so this guy had a few too many in him. And we all know how decision making goes on those kinds of nights.

Detective Inspector Titus Phiri ‘forcibly seized cell keys’ on Tuesday morning whilst ‘in a state of intoxication,’ Zambia’s Police Service said in a press release on Wednesday.

‘Subsequently, (Phiri) unlocked both the male and female cells and instructed the suspects to leave, stating they were free to cross over into the New Year,’ the police statement said.

More than a dozen prisoners were let free, and now they’ve got a manhunt going for 13 missing prisoners. These detainees were facing charges of assault, theft, and other crimes.

The officer who released the prisoners has been arrested, and reports haven’t confirmed it, but I assume he’s still pretty hung over.
