Gun “buyback” programs are one of the dumbest ideas of clown world.
Which is why it’s so amusing to see authorities try ever-harder to get people to hand in their firearms:
Dozens of cars lined up outside a New Orleans church parking lot this week as residents flocked to exchange firearms for video game consoles through a city-supported gun buyback initiative meant to improve public safety as Louisiana loosens gun ownership laws.
Leticia Clanton, 50, waited all morning Tuesday for the opportunity. While she had a permit to carry a concealed handgun she had owned for the past decade, she also has eight young grandchildren running around her home. Clanton chose to swap her weapon for a PlayStation 5 worth about $500.
Yeah, New Orleans PD, you’ve definitely solved the local crime epidemic — getting grandmas to hand over their handguns!
Media reports indicate that there were nearly 200 murders in the city in 2023 and more than 120 in 2024. That’s an encouraging decline, of course, but somehow I doubt that gun buyback programs have that much to do with it.
Particularly since, you know, nobody’s interested in them:
Over the course of two hours, city police officers received and dismantled 32 revolvers, shotguns and semi-automatics, all traded in with no questions asked as long the guns were functional. In all, the city collected 94 guns through three buybacks over the last six months, all involving swaps for gaming devices.
Let’s do the math here: 94 guns over three buybacks across 24 weeks…
That comes out to a grand total of about 1.75 guns off the New Orleans streets per day.
Like most gun “buybacks,” this is super easy to hack. Let’s say you have a cheap pistol, like a Highpoint or a Taurus, that you bought for $200-$300.
You could trade in an old blaster and get a BRAND NEW $500 VIDEO GAME CONSOLE COURTESY OF TAXPAYERS.
Keep up the great work, NOLA: There are many more grandmas out there waiting to turn their guns in!
