House Speaker Mike Johnson confirmed on Thursday that House Republicans will investigate the “corrupt” Jan. 6th committee.
He offered the confirmation while responding in a tweet to word that the committee’s co-chairs, Liz Cheney and Bennie Thompson — had been awarded the second-highest civilian medal by President Joe Biden.

“What a complete joke and utter embarrassment,” Johnson wrote in his responding tweet. “Biden is foolishly giving an award to members of Congress who intentionally and repeatedly lied to the American people?! The Jan 6 Select Committee manipulated AND destroyed evidence – created a fake, phony narrative all to try and hurt Trump.”
“They even hired a TV producer from the legacy media in a desperate attempt to legitimize what Americans knew was a total hoax and complete waste of time. Be assured of this: House Republicans WILL continue our investigation into this corrupt committee and it will be FULLY FUNDED so it can continue next Congress,” he added.

This comes weeks after House Administration Subcommittee on Oversight Chair Rep. Barry Loudermilk released a report recommending that Cheney be investigated for witness tampering.
“Based on the evidence obtained by this Subcommittee, numerous federal laws were likely broken by Liz Cheney, the former Vice Chair of the January 6 Select Committee, and these violations should be investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” the report states.
The report goes on to specifically note that she “tampered with at least one witness, Cassidy Hutchinson, by secretly communicating with Hutchinson without Hutchinson’s attorney’s knowledge.”
Cheney even successfully encouraged Hutchinson to hire committee-friendly attorneys instead of keeping her original representation. Later, less than two weeks after she hired new attorneys, she sat for a committee interview “under unusual circumstances,” according to the report.
“Prior to this interview, nearly every interview the Select Committee conducted included approximately a dozen people – including committee staff members, committee counsel, often a Member of the Select Committee, the interviewee, and the interviewee’s legal representation,” the report reads. “Most of the interviews were done in large conference rooms or over Zoom, allowing space for all participants.”
“Hutchinson’s fourth transcribed interview, however, was vastly different. It consisted of only four people: Representative Cheney, one attorney from the Select Committee, Hutchinson, and Hutchinson’s new counsel. Additionally, instead of the Select Committee conducting the interview in a conference room or virtually, Representative Cheney used her private hideaway inside of the United States Capitol Building,” the report continues.
Liz Cheney communicated with Cassidy Hutchinson, without Hutchinson’s attorney present, encouraged her to fire her attorney, and helped her obtain new pro-bono representation.

A previous report released by Loudermilk last March also found that Cheney and Thompson both “deleted records and hid evidence” ahead of Republicans retaking the House after the 2022 midterms.
“Reps. Thompson and Cheney failed to turn over video recordings of witness interviews and depositions despite using these recordings in their high-profile, primetime hearings,” the report reads.
“The Subcommittee recovered over one hundred deleted or password-protected files, including some files that were deleted days before Republicans took the majority. They also hid multiple transcribed interviews of witnesses who had firsthand knowledge of Trump‘s actions on January 6,” it continues.
Will Cheney and Thompson actually be prosecuted, though? It depends but does seem likely. During a TV appearance in August of 2023, Attorney General nominee Pam Bondi vowed that the “prosecutors will be prosecuted” and that “the investigators will be investigated.”
Meanwhile, FBI Director Kash Patel is allegedly “salivating” to investigate Cheney in particular, according to conservative newsman and commentator Bill O’Reilly.

“If Liz Cheney witness tampered, she deserves the FBI being all over her front lawn,” O’Reilly said in the clip above. “If she tried to convince Cassidy Hutchinson behind closed doors to testify a certain way in front of the Jan. 6 committee, then this woman violated federal law, period.”
