In a severe disappointment for Democrats and their press minions, Speaker Mike Johnson was re-elected today when two “no” votes flipped after the first round of voting, making a second round unnecessary. Keith Self of Texas and Ralph Norman of South Carolina were the Congressmen who changed their minds, leaving Kentucky’s Thomas Massie as the only purported Republican who voted with the Democrats.

Johnson says that he made no promises to Self and Norman to induce them to switch their votes. Reportedly, Donald Trump talked to them after they voted against Johnson in the first round.

Republicans dodged a bullet today, but the close vote is a reminder of the need for party unity. With a slim margin in the House, Republicans can’t afford prima donnas. Unfortunately, Democrats have historically been a lot better at party unity than Republicans.
