Guy Fieri is one of the most entertaining, most genuine American celebrities – a real national treasure.
And apparently he’s also a national security expert:
Shows and content featuring MrBeast, Kelly Clarkson, and Guy Fieri were approved to receive production support from the Department of Defense last year, according to documents obtained by Rolling Stone. The charm offensive comes at a time when military recruitment has hit historic lows, and both defense officials and members of Congress are seeking new ways to recruit young people into the armed services.
Turning to the Great Guido is certainly one way to do it!
The government is hedging its bets on ol’ Butterbean in part because it’s experiencing a catastrophic drop off in estimation among younger people: According to the government, “Generation Z or ‘zoomers’ have seen more than a 10 percent decline in military favorability, with only 35 percent holding favorable views in 2021, down from 46 percent in 2016.”
(I wonder why???)
The funds were distributed through Production Assistance Agreements, or PAAs. It’s not quite clear what the PAAs funded, or if they were ever even followed through; sometimes the military will pull back on bankrolling production if they decide the terms aren’t favorable.
Not sure if we’ll see Guy in uniform anytime soon, but if so…
