President Joe Biden continues to stun with his lame-duck actions, issuing pardons, commuting sentences for murderers, and now proving the political motivations of the January 6 committee.

In what many saw as a parting shot at President-elect Donald Trump, Biden is set to award the Presidential Citizens Medal to former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), a rabid Trump critic on the sham committee. Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS), who served as chair of the Jan. 6 committee, is also one of the 20 individuals who will be given the nation’s second-highest civilian award.

“The Presidential Citizens Medal is awarded to citizens of the United States of America who have performed exemplary deeds of service for their country or their fellow citizens,” the White House said in an announcement Thursday.

Cheney, a so-called Republican who campaigned with Vice President Harris ahead of November’s election, will be honored as a former member of Congress and for her role on the special House committee that investigated the events of January 6, 2021. The daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney has been a vocal, fear-mongering critic of Trump.

“Throughout two decades in public service, including as a Congresswoman for Wyoming and Vice Chair of the Committee on the January 6 attack, Liz Cheney has raised her voice—and reached across the aisle—to defend our Nation and the ideals we stand for: Freedom. Dignity. And decency,” the White House release stated.

“Her integrity and intrepidness remind us all what is possible if we work together,” the announcement read.

As chair of the committee, Thompson was at the “forefront of defending the rule of law with unwavering integrity and a steadfast commitment to truth,” according to the White House.

Trump told NBC’s “Meet the Press” last month that members of the committee had done “something that’s inexcusable” in the so-called investigation. The incoming 47th president suggested Cheney and others who participated should be investigated and go to jail.

“Donald Trump’s suggestion that members of Congress who later investigated his illegal and unconstitutional actions should be jailed is a continuation of his assault on the rule of law and the foundations of our republic,” Cheney sputtered in response.

Meanwhile, talks of a preemptive pardon from the president did not seem out of reason for Thompson who told CNN last month, “It’s [Biden’s] prerogative. If he offers it to me or other members of the committee … I would accept it, but it’s his choice.”

Other recipients of the award on Thursday include former Sens. Chris Dodd of Connecticut, Bill Bradley of New Jersey, Nancy Kassebaum of Kansas, and Ted Kaufman of Delaware.

Social media users blasted Biden for honoring Cheney who has been accused of witness tampering while on the Jan. 6 committee.
