It’s been nearly thirty years since the first Toy Story movie came out. Since then, the beloved franchise has grossed more than $3 billion at the box office worldwide – cementing its status as one of the best of all time.
That’s in no small part thanks to the tremendous voice acting in the films – and it’s doubtful any character has been more beloved than Buzz Lightyear, played by Tim Allen.
Now, Tim Allen is preparing to play the role of Buzz once again in the upcoming Toy Story 5, and he might even be more excited than the fans!
Allen Returns To Buzz Lightyear
“I just did the first five-hour session for Buzz, probably a week ago,” Allen, 71, told Collider. “It’s really, really weird to get back in it.”
Allen stayed quiet about what the actual plot of the fifth Toy Story movie is. However, it’s been reported that Allen will be voicing multiples of Buzz Lightyear for the movie.
“It’s a very, very clever story,” Allen teased.
The Toy Story movies have been hugely successful. Indeed, Toy Story 4 alone brought in 1.07 billion globally.
“I don’t really believe it’s about the money, when it comes to the motivation for another project,” Allen said. “I’m sure they want it to be a success, but that’s not why they did it.”
“Had they not come up with a brilliant script, they wouldn’t have done it and they wouldn’t have called me and Tom [Hanks],” he continued. “It’s really clever.”
Challenges Of Returning To Buzz Lightyear
As for the challenges of returning to this character for the first time in years, Allen said, “It was really a struggle to get, and then maybe two hours in, I was doing Buzz.”
“I’m so blessed to be Buzz Lightyear, to be honest,” he gushed. “It’s gonna be fun. I think we’re a year out. I’ve gotten up to the third act. We’ll do the third act. And then, we’ll go back and clean it. And then, I’ll do it about five more times. It’s a really good story, guys. It’s really good.”
In this same interview, Allen was asked what his own personal favorite Toy Story movie is.
“With Toy Story 2 and 3, I’m on a bridge. There’s nothing like Toy Story 1, though,” he admitted. “That was such an amazing experience. It’s hard to say. I’d probably give it to Toy Story 3.”
That’s the sign of an incredible franchise: when sequels hold up, or even surpass the original.
If you want to revisit the Toy Story movies, they are all available to stream on Disney+.

Allen’s New Sitcom
After decades of success in Hollywood, Allen is still as busy as ever. He’s currently starring in the new sitcom Shifting Gears alongside the former 2 Broke Girls star Kat Dennings. This marks Allen’s return to sitcoms after his hit shows Home Improvement and Last Man Standing. Allen has made it clear that he could not be happier to be returning to the world of sitcoms.
“There’s nothing like sitcoms,” Allen told TV Insider. “They seem tired. Until you watch one in person.”
“I’ve done a full circle,” he gushed. “I look around and I’m on the Disney lot, and I keep walking by the Home Improvement set, which is over that way. I sat in front of the set and they still have a sign on it: Home Improvement. I’m kind of finishing, if you will, where I started.”
Shifting Gears premieres on January 8. Check out a preview of it below.
