That’s not a setup for a joke; there’s no punchline here.
This is Not the Bee, after all.
It’s actually the premise of a news story published by the New York Times.
A “reproductive health center” in Maryland was “blessed” by a coalition of “religious leaders” who burned incense in the halls.
(I know that’s a lot of ironic quotes for one sentence, but it’s pretty clear that none of these words mean what they say.)
Rev. Katey Zeh, an ordained “Baptist” “minister,” runs the Religious Community for Reproductive Choice, and one of the services they offer is blessings for abortion clinics.
Their site says,
RCRC works with spiritual leaders and organizations in local communities to lead interfaith, inclusive rituals of blessing in healthcare facilities and clinics where abortion services are provided.
We affirm that the care and compassion given to pregnant individuals honor their full personhood – a personhood that cannot and should not be diminished for any reason.
We affirm the work of abortion care as sacred.
‘You all are blessings to those who come to you for care during some of their most vulnerable and sometimes painful moments,’ Zeh told the abortion clinic staff.
Josh Mercer, vice president of CatholicVote, condemned the blessing and the use of religious rites in its celebration:
For decades, the Left has been downright hostile to expressions of religious faith — except apparently when it comes to celebrating abortion. Suddenly incense, ritual, prayer, and reverence all have merit. How wicked that religious practice is being hijacked to promote the killing of children.
But really, hasn’t religious practice always been a part of the sacrifice of children to false gods for the hope of blessings?
Tell me, what exactly is the difference between the Canaanites sacrificing their children to Moloch for the hope of financial security, and say, Whoopi Goldberg killing 6 or 7 babies by age 25, so they wouldn’t mess up her budding career?
At least now, people are not pretending that sacrificing children on the altar of success is a humanist or secular act.
Child sacrifice has always been a spiritual abomination, and it always will be.
