Dungeons & Dragons’ decision to go “woke” and change its rules for the first time in ages has some gamers fuming.

One new rule states that “races” are now “species,” according to the New York Times. While that doesn’t sound bad in theory, troubles emerge when it’s actually applied to the game.

The Times puts it like this: “Some character traits have [now] been divorced from biological identity.

Sound familiar?

“[A] mountain dwarf is no longer inherently brawny and durable, a high elf no longer intelligent and dexterous by definition,” the Times notes.

Or translated into modern “woke” culture, a man is no longer a man — a woman is no longer a woman. Get it?

But it gets worse.

“What they’re trying to do here is put up a signal flare, to not only current players but potential future players, that this game is a safe, inclusive, thoughtful and sensitive approach to fantasy storytelling,” writer and Dungeons & Dragon gamer Ryan Lessard told the Times.

Sound familiar again?

According to Kyle Mann of The Babylon Bee, another new rule states that a player may raise their arms in an “X” if they’re triggered by something in the game.

Not everybody in the gaming world appreciates these new rules.

“It’s an unnecessary thing,” Dungeons & Dragons co-creator Robert J Kuntz told the Times. “It attempts to play into something that I’m not sure is even worthy of addressing, as if the word ‘race’ is bad.”

Indeed.

Wizards of the Coast, the Hasbro-owned publisher of Dungeons & Dragons, defended the new rules by arguing that they’re what players wanted. As proof, they cited sales of the “2024 Player’s Handbook,” which has evidently been flying off the shelves.

However, the book boasts some noticeably negative reviews on Amazon.

“I don’t want to be reminded of the evil ideology that’s destroying my country while trying to immerse myself in a fantasy world,” one review reads. “DEI has no place in fantasy, whether it’s in the artwork/aesthetic, the game mechanic, or the ethos of the game or book.”

“If you don’t care about DEI (which you should), want an oversimplified edition, and don’t want the full immersion of playing a fantasy game with high stakes in which your character could die, buy this edition. If you want to play dnd at the highest level, I’d suggest 3.5e or Pathfinder. You’re going to get better aesthetics, rules, game mechanics, and aren’t going to be inundated with woke DEI nonsense,” it continues.

X owner and DOGE co-chair Elon Musk has also taken note of the new, “woke” Dungeons & Dragons, especially because both the new “Players Handbook” and “Dungeon Master’s Guide” trash Dungeons & Dragons’ founders as essentially racist white men.

Look (*Language warning):

Musk’s involvement has spurred many Dungeons & Dragons fans to urge him to buy Wizards of the Coast or even Hasbro itself to save the game.
