Puerto Rico was hit on New Year’s Eve with a blackout impacting 1.3 million customers.

Energy customers lost power at 5:30 a.m due to an infrastructure problem at a power plant, NBC News reports

The Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport said in a post on X that it is running on generators, allowing airport operations to continue normally.

LUMA explained on X that the company will be restoring power to customers in phases and expects full power to be on within 24 to 48 hours.

The island has a history of blackouts. Last summer, according to NBC News, protests erupted after a series of outages, and the mayor of San Juan declared a state of emergency.
