The Joint Task Force of the National Capital Region will conduct the state funeral, which lasts seven to 10 days.
Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter will be laid to rest during a state funeral in Washington on Jan. 9, 2025
In a White House announcement, President Joe Biden said on Dec. 29 that suitable honors would be rendered by units of the armed forces.
The late-night statement was made during Biden’s vacation in St. Croix.
Biden also called upon all Americans to assemble on that day in their respective places of worship to pay homage to Carter.
He ordered Jan. 9 to be a national day of mourning for Carter, who was 100 years old, and that U.S. flags across the country and abroad be flown at half-staff for 30 days beginning Dec. 29.
“This is a sad day, but it brings back an incredible amount of good memories,” Biden said. “America and the world, in my view, lost a remarkable leader. He was a statesman and humanitarian, and Jill and I lost a dear friend.”
The first will include ceremonies in the deceased president’s state of residence. For Carter, that will be Georgia.
Following that will be ceremonies in Washington that will likely involve military bands, Armed Forces honor guards, and National Guard reserve units.
The final stage’s ceremonies will be where Carter has chosen to be interred.
However, the final arrangements, such as motorcades and public events, are still pending and will be announced by the Joint Task Force.
In place of flowers, the Carter family has requested donations to The Carter Center.
Carter’s state funeral will end on Jan. 19, the day before President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration in Washington.
Carter, a Democrat, was the 39th U.S. president, serving one term from 1977 to 1981. He was a submariner in both the Navy’s Atlantic and Pacific fleets and in 2002 was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian work.
He was also the president who relinquished control of the Panama Canal to the Panamanian government.
