Jay Leno shot down rumors that he was beaten up over a mob gambling debt that sprang up when he showed up for a comedy show sporting visible facial injuries.
The late-night television legend’s condition led some to speculate that there was something sinister behind the 74-year-old’s eye patch, facial bruises, and broken ribs which he said were the result of falling down a hill while trying to take a shortcut near the hotel he was staying at in Pittsburgh, PA.
Leno scoffed at the conspiracy theories during his sit-down with fellow comic Bill Maher on the latest edition of the HBO host’s “Club Random” podcast.

“It’s a conspiracy theory since you’ve had three accidents that you actually have gambling debts and you’re being beaten up by the mob,” Maher told his guest as they laughed it off.
“I love the idea that the mob would drive to Greenberg, Pennsylvania, wait outside the Hampton Inn in kind of a sleety, kind of rainy day to throw me down a hill,” the accident-prone Leno cracked.
He had previously suffered injuries two years ago when he accidentally set his face on fire while working on one of his classic cars, and then months later in a motorcycle mishap when he suffered injuries including a broken collarbone, broken ribs, and cracked kneecaps.
The former late-night host took a tumble down a steep hill, previously explaining to Inside Edition “I fell 60 feet. Boom, boom, boom, boom.”

Leno said that he “hit a bunch of rocks,” and ended up “all black and blue.”
“No, that’s not what they’re saying,” Maher said. “They’re saying throw you down the hill was your cover story, but they just beat you up like the mob always does and that when you had the other accident where you fell off your ‘motorcycle’ wink wink, and had your knees…”
Leno responded, “No, what happened was a guy had a rope across a driveway …”
“Sure he did Jay,” joked Maher.
“I got a new face when my face caught fire,” Leno said of the garage accident. “And then two months later, it tore my face, I had to call my face guy ‘I need another face’ so I went up and he gave me another one so…”
Maher then said, “So the article started out saying Jay Leno is worth $450 million dollars, has gambling debts. I was like, that is quite a gambling debt…”
“I like the idea they wouldn’t just take one of my cars for the gambling debt,” Leno joked about his well known collection of vintage autos.
Leno also told Maher that his famous “Tonight Show” predecessor Johnny Carson DID get into hot water with the mafia.
He said that Carson and his lawyer were once at a New York watering hole popular with wiseguys.
“They’re having drinks, and they start hitting on these two girls, kinda rudely. Turns out they’re mob girlfriends,” he said.
“They put a hit out on Carson. So Carson stops The Tonight Show for the week. He just goes, he leaves, because this is real,” Leno said, adding that the hit was called off after NBC offered to air coverage of an Italian “parade” run by mob families.
