Police are saying that an alleged Christmas Day attempted robbery resulted in three of the potential suspects needing medical attention.

The armed children allegedly approached a 25-year-old man and his girlfriend, trying to rob them at gunpoint at a Houston, Texas apartment complex. The suspects looked so young, in fact, that the victim assumed it was an innocent prank being pulled by some mischievous kids. Once he realized that both the robbery and the firearm were real, however, he pulled his own gun and began firing at the boys. Three of the boys, the youngest of which was just 12 years old, were wounded. The 12-year-old was hospitalized and was said to be in critical condition.

The other two returned to the crime scene to get help for their injuries.

One of the boys, 14, who was not injured was taken into custody.

The victim is cooperating with the police and is not currently facing any charges.

“Of all things, being Christmas, and this is a child. First thing that comes to my mind is, number one, where is the parent? Number two, if you got here with a gun, what are you doing out here with a gun?” asked neighbor Bruce Bailey, who recounted his memory of the shooting’s aftermath to KHOU.

“I screamed out to him, ‘Are you OK?’ And he just put his hand in the air and screamed for help and I went and tried to help him,” he explained, referring to the seriously wounded 12-year-old.

It is unclear whether the gun carried by the boys is real, or a BB gun.

According to KHOU, the case is expected to be referred to a grand jury, which will decide if any charges will be brought.
