“This is our kingdom, and we’re here to take it back.”
Imagine the oral equivalent of just plonking that line there like it sits at the beginning of this article. That’s how actress Rachel Zegler delivered it in the upcoming Disney live-action version of Snow White. Flat, emotionless, and with a blank look on her face as she stood before the Wicked Queen, flanked by a pseudo-medieval crowd of bored peasants with pitchforks but no motivation. And like the rest of her youthful generation, Zegler looked as if she expected the Queen to applaud her mediocre girl-bossery. Or at least to give her an E for effort.
That’s probably why the trailer for this grisly piece of cinema is getting such a drubbing. Out for two weeks on Youtube, the trailer has 6 million views and only 31,000 “likes” – compared to 777,000 who “disliked” the video (you need to download a plugin to view the dislike count because here in America, YouTube disabled them to stop people form hurting video makers’ feelings.
A different trailer for the movie released four months ago racked up 100k likes, to 1.4 million dislikes.
Maybe it’s the obviously digital woodland creatures, or the video-game-tier dwarves’ cottage. Maybe it’s the feminist-inflected changes to the storyline that excised the rescuing prince and put Snow White in the captain’s chair to #TakeBackOurKingdom from her bitch stepmother. It’s probably all of those things, but it’s also definitely Rachel Zegler and Disney. The woman has been wearing out her welcome before there was even enough footage to make a demo reel. Remember her I-am-girl-boss-hear-me-roar moment talking to the press about how this wasn’t going to be a patriarchal fairy tale where some dumb MAN had to rescue the princess?
Turns out movie fans don’t like having their memories of classic movies mocked, and they don’t appreciate narcissistic actresses implying that they are stupid and bigoted for liking what they like.
Will any of this sink in for Disney, Zegler, or any of the other woke actors and actresses trying in vain to build a career on insulting the public’s taste? Probably not. Egotistical people are not known for insight and honest self-reflection.
But in the meantime, the mockery is pretty glorious. Check out what people had to say in the YouTube comments:
