As CNN‘s ratings plummet to record lows, some so-called journalists at the network claim that the failure is due to the network’s soft approach to President-elect Donald Trump.
According to an anonymous report in The Washington Post, CNN journalists said that Trump’s coverage during the 2024 election cycle was insufficiently critical.
They claim that the decision to hold a town hall with Trump last year also upset both staff and viewers.
“It is widely felt at CNN that we didn’t meet the mark,” one insider said of the network’s handling of the election.
“I think a lot of it can be explained by the viewers making a decision that they just don’t like what we’re doing. The viewers are pretty smart.”
However, despite claims the claims the network is leading among other news outlets, ratings show otherwise.
CNN’s daily audience among the coveted 24-54 demographic dropped by 1 percent from 2023, from 94,000 to 92,000 viewers.
The network now accounts for a measly 11 percent of prime-time cable news viewers
Since Trump’s presidential victory, CNN’s prime-time viewership has plummeted by 52 percent.
The news comes following the network’s leadership troubles. Former CEO Chris Licht was dismissed after a brief and controversial tenure, and his replacement, Mark Thompson, promised a more balanced approach—which has failed to materialize.
Meanwhile, veteran anchor Chris Wallace left the network amid plummeting ratings,
CNN’s revenue and influence continue to be tied to traditional TV ratings, while its digital presence suffers also with the launch of a $3.99 subscription service for online content falling flat in the face of competitors
“What’s hard for me is: What is CNN known for? CNN is known for breaking news,” said Cilizza.
“People turn it on when something big happens. And I think that’s a really good brand journalistically, but I just don’t know how you make money off it.”
“Ratings control everything,” a former senior producer explained.
“It controls the money, it controls the influence, and it’s a huge morale issue.”
