Right after America slides into its collective post-holiday hangover, the 119th Congress will be sworn in and get to work. The Republican majority will remain razor thin, but what has also been cut down in size is the gang of progressive Democrat members known as “The Squad.” Everyone’s favorite bartender, New York Dem Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a.k.a. AOC, will still be around to give Republicans endless hours of comedy gold, but because of a pesky thing called the will of the people, a couple will be packing up and heading home. One of those is Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO).

On a personal note, as one of Bush’s unfortunate constituents, I couldn’t be happier, although her replacement, soon-to-be former St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Wesley Bell, is slightly less socialist than Bush but may be a lot less incendiary. Bush blames her primary loss to Bell on a massive funding effort by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) because of her position on the Israel-Hamas war. She was an outspoken critic of the Israeli government and called for a cease-fire. She goes on to say, however, that AIPAC’s campaign ads against her were “deceptive” because of her no vote on Joe Biden’s infrastructure bill. She also goes on to blame “primarily Republican money” as the cause for her loss. But another aspect of that loss could have been the fact that several municipalities within the district have Jewish populations of 40-50 percent.
Bush stated, “I wasn’t unseated because I didn’t take care of my community. We brought over $2 billion to our district in four years.” Bush claims her office helped constituents traverse federal agencies for things like Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans and obtaining housing. All that money was spent on PPP loans and housing? That’s interesting since you don’t have to go far in Cori Bush’s district to find an abundance of empty storefronts and crumbling infrastructure. As a constituent, I would like to know where all that money really went. Bush also points to the Biden administration’s COVID-era eviction moratorium as a victory during her time in Congress.

Bush tried to portray her fellow Squad members as “that regular everyday person from our communities.” The problem with that is that just last month, Americans, regular everyday people from their communities, overwhelmingly voted for Donald Trump’s America First conservative policies and soundly rejected ideas like free healthcare, free education, and the endless list of freebies progressives like Bush support. She said of the thinning Squad membership:
“The Squad will keep fighting. First of all, the Squad is big. And I know we want to make the Squad just out to be a few people, but we don’t do this work by ourselves.”
She continued, “Anyone who underestimates our power is severely mistaken, because we aren’t going anywhere, and I will always be Squad. I’m not going far.”

Bush admits that, for Democrats to have a chance in 2026 and 2028, they need to realize that Americans spoke loudly on November 5, saying their main concerns were those “kitchen table” issues like the economy. But she also said that she felt that the progressives in the Democrat party were often “shut out.” Bush added, “The progressives are not the enemy. We are saying that we are regular, everyday people. We are hearing what the people are saying.” Funny, that’s not what the American people said.

As for what Cori Bush is going to do in the future, she says another run for Congress is not off the table… great.
“The possibilities are endless. All I know right now is that I am not going anywhere. I’m going to keep fighting for the issues that I fought for before I ever entered Congress, and since I’ve been in Congress. Running for office again is not off the table at all. I did not expect to only be in Congress for four years, and so I do believe at some point I will run again, whether it’s for Congress or something else, I don’t know. I don’t have any plans right now, but it’s not off the table. What I will do, though, is I will organize and I will work on the same issues and more that I started with before I ever made it to the Congress.”
She added, “I probably could have flipped over a few more tables.” But here’s the thing about flipping tables: be prepared to have your own flipped as well. Finally, Cori Bush said, “St. Louis deserves the best.” We sure do. That’s why you are coming home.
